Rhinoplasty is an intricate procedure that improves upon a patient's facial symmetry. During this 1-3 hour-long procedure, a surgeon makes an incision either in the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or on the vertical strip of skin between the nostrils known as the columella (open rhinoplasty). After the incision is made, the surgeon gently lifts the skin of the nose, reshapes the bone and cartilage, and carefully positions the skin and sutures into place. The patient's nose is then bandaged and an external splint is applied in order to help the nose maintain its new shape. The splint is worn during the first week of recovery. Complete recovery from nose surgery typically requires four to six weeks. If considering rhinoplasty, it is best to first consult board-certified plastic surgeons as they have the most experience in their field.
