Malignant mesothelioma generally has no symptoms early in the disease process. In most cases, asbestos exposure could have occurred as many as 30 to 60 years earlier. Mesothelioma begins to develop when asbestos fibers become lodged in the lung and scar tissue forms. However, the patient does not detect the formation of the scar tissue since it causes no perceptible pain.
Large amounts of fluid start to gather as the fibrous scar tissue amasses in large quantities and the cancerous tumors start to grow in the mesothelium. The fluid causes much of the pain associated with mesothelioma. Chest pain due to pressure and pain while coughing are directly related to fluid accumulation.
The spread of the tumors can also cause pain as the tumors push against nerves and other organs. It is important for the mesothelioma patient to contact a doctor if pain is experienced. There is no reason to endure pain when there are numerous remedies available to make the patient more comfortable.
Certain cancer treatments may help to relieve pain if the tumors are removed or progression slowed. Additionally, the fluid can be drained to help eliminate pressure caused by the accumulation. There are specific pain management tools separate from direct treatment for cancerous tumors. Patients should ask their doctors about directly treating pain.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer related to asbestos exposure. Get more information on types of mesothelioma - pleural mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma - and types of mesothelioma cancer cells: epithelioid, sarcomatoid and biphasic.
