Due to sun damage, unhealthy diet or other environmental factors, many people might experience premature aging that can make them feel self conscious about their appearance. Many cosmetic surgeons recognize the need for anti aging treatments for patients and are now offering a variety of procedures to ease the appearance of age. Facelift is one the most requested anti-aging plastic surgery procedures in the country. With face lift surgery, plastic surgeons create small incisions in front of or behind the ears, and gently tighten sagging skin along the face, jaw and neck. In light of the popularity of this procedure, cosmetic surgeons perform customized techniques of facelift to treat individual needs. Mini facelift and threadlift are less invasive cosmetic surgery procedures than face lift, but can yield dramatic results.
Patients who do not wish to undergo cosmetic surgery often choose to receive injectable fillers, topical injections of anti aging materials. Botox injections, the most widely used injectable filler, is an injection that stops facial muscles from contracting and lessens the prominence of wrinkles. It is commonly used to fill in frown lines and crows' feet. Recently, patients have requested Botox injections in their arm pits or feet because the injectable has shown to hinder perspiration.
For patients who worry about allergic reactions, Radiesse is a non-toxic, non-allergenic filler composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, glycerin and sterile water. It is more effective than Botox at filling in deep wrinkles, scars and skin folds around the nose and mouth. The results of Radiesse can last for two years or more, unlike Botox injections, which fade after four to six months.
To fill in hollowed cheeks, sunken eyes and indented chin surfaces, cosmetic surgeons use Sculptra. The filler encourages growth in the thickness of the skin, minimizing skin folds and wrinkles.
Other requested injectable fillers include Restylane and Juvederm. In addition to their abilities to lessen the prominence of wrinkles, Juvederm and Restylane are used in lip augmentation procedures. These hyaluronic-acid-based fillers offer longer results than collagen-based injections.
Patients can also receive a variety of non-invasive topical treatments to smooth skin and refine wrinkles. Laser skin resurfacing and microdermabrasion are facial treatments to exfoliate dead skins and treat deeper layers of the skin. One of the latest skin resurfacing techniques is Thermage, a skin procedure utilizing radio waves. The Thermage procedure delivers radio wave energy to affected areas to promote the growth of collagen. Patients can enjoy the results of Thermage for up to two years.
In conjunction with their plastic surgery facilities, cosmetic surgeons may also offer a medical spa that performs a variety of skin and facial treatments. Dermatologists who work at medical spas may be able to prescribe Retin-A topical treatment, an ointment that treats adult acne and promotes cell renewal. Patients may also receive Vitamin C or antioxidant creams to provide anti-aging nutrients to their skin. With any type of skin care treatment, it is always recommended to wear sunscreen to protect from damaging UVB sun rays and drink plenty of water.
